When History Dances on the Streets: Polonez for Fredro 2026
Yesterday, January 28th, the Wrocław Market Square (Rynek) transformed into a grand, open-air ballroom. Hundreds of students and residents gathered to dance the “Polonez for Fredro,” a beautiful tradition that marks the countdown to the final high school exams (matura).
What is the Polonez? The Polonaise (Polonez) is a historic Polish dance in triple time. It is a processional dance, characterized by a slow, gliding step and graceful bows. Historically, it opened royal balls and noble celebrations. Today, it remains a symbol of Polish elegance and national identity, traditionally performed by students to open their “Studniówka” (Prom).
The Event Since 2001, Wrocław has taken this dance out of the ballrooms and into the heart of the city. Dancing around the monument of Aleksander Fredro, the famous Polish comedic playwright, is considered a “good luck” charm for students. It’s a moment where the city’s history meets the energy of the new generation.
