Wrocław Zoo & Afrykarium: A 150-Year History You Must See

A History Starting in 1865 Founded when the city was still part of the Prussian Empire (known as Breslau), the zoo opened its doors back in 1865. This makes it the oldest zoological garden in present-day Poland. Having survived two World Wars and countless historical challenges, the park has been closed and reopened several times, always managing to rise from its ashes, becoming a symbol of the city’s own resilience.
The Afrykarium: A Modern Masterpiece While the zoo’s history is fascinating, its present is literally breathtaking. The real jewel in the crown is the Afrykarium, opened in 2014. It is a massive, world-class oceanarium dedicated exclusively to the aquatic and semi-aquatic fauna of the African continent.
Walking through the 18-meter transparent glass tunnel as sharks, rays, and sea turtles swim right above your head is an experience that leaves both adults and children in awe. From South African penguins to Nile hippos and crocodiles, the Afrykarium is an immersive journey that requires at least half a day to fully appreciate.
